Bundaberg is an attractive and progressive
city located 368 kilometres north of Brisbane. Producing one fifth of
Australia's sugar crop, the city is surrounded by a green sea of sugarcane
plantations that extend all the way to the beaches of the area. Bundaberg's
attractive centre of parks, heritage and modern buildings offers a regional
charm, welcoming visitors who are well catered for with excellent shopping,
friendly restaurants and many attractions close at hand. Settled in the
1867, the city name comes from the joining of the name of the local Aboriginal
tribal elders Bunda and the Saxon word for town - Burgh. This was changed
to Bundaberg around the turn of last century. The 'Whaling Wall' mural,
a dominant seven story high landmark in the city centre provides a year
round reminder of our marine friends - painted by world-renowned environmental
artist Wyland.
The real flavour of Queensland can be found at the Bundaberg Rum Distillery
in East Bundaberg, tours operate daily throughout the year to see the
making of Australia's best selling rum. Nearby, Schmeider's Cooperage
and Craft Centre offers a unique experience into local arts and craft,
with glass blowing and timber working displays and a beautiful array of
locally made pottery and crafts. Tropical Wines proudly make their wine
from local fruit, not grapes and you can taste and purchase at their North
Bundaberg winery. The Bundaberg Botanical Gardens feature winding boardwalks
through beautiful landscapes. Enjoy a leisurely ride on a coal fired steam
train or visit the Bundaberg and District Historical Museum and Fairymead
House Sugar Museum. Within a brief lifetime of forty years, Bundaberg's
favourite son Bert Hinkler became one of the world's greatest pioneer
aviators. The Hinkler House Memorial Museum is housed in Hinkler's Southampton
home that he designed and lived in from 1926 until his death in 1933.
Brick by brick the house was relocated and faithfully restored and is
now an aviation. b
